The population of Eigg stands at just under 100 people. Tourism is controlled: there are very few homes on the island that are not lived in throughout the year. A sense of self-sufficiency and independence is built into the fabric of its community.

Is there WIFI on Eigg?
There is no internet or 3G access at the bothy, but there is an internet cafe at the Pier, and wifi at the learning centre in the Primary School – the wifi password is in the info folder in the bothy. There is no mobile phone reception.
Can I take my car to Eigg?
To get to the Isle of Eigg, you catch a ferry! Please note that visitors cannot bring their vehicle to Eigg* – part of the joy of visiting our island is leaving your car behind. IMPORTANT – Social distancing means the capacity of the CalMac ferry is restricted.

It’s low-lying and relatively fertile, with a range of accommodation, so in summer its resident population of 40 is doubled. Muck is owned by the MacEwen family, who’ve lived and farmed here for a century.
What are the rules for using electricity on Eigg?
We can only use what we make. To ensure nobody goes short, each house has a maximum use limit at any one time of 5kW, each business 10kW. 5kW is enough for an electric kettle and washing machine, or fifty 100w light bulbs!

How do you get to the Isle of Eigg?
To get to the Isle of Eigg, you catch a ferry from Mallaig. Caledonian Macbrayne operates the Small Isles ferry service to Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna all year round. Additionally, during the summer months from late April to September you can also travel from Arisaig.
