What is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)? OCT is an imaging method used to generate a picture of the back of the eye, called the retina. The picture is made by precisely measuring the amount of a dim red light that reflects off the retina. OCT is routinely used to image the eyes of patients with glaucoma.

Is an OCT scan safe? The OCT scanner is CE marked and the low powered laser light is safe, and cannot harm your eye. The OCT scan is suitable for use with people fitted with pacemakers or metallic implants and you can wear your hearing aid throughout the procedure.

How long does an OCT eye scan take?

How often should I have an OCT scan?
A: We recommend a baseline OCT to all patients age 40 and older. Patients of all ages with a family history or risk factors for glaucoma and macular degeneration should also have an OCT scan. All patients with diabetes should undergo OCT testing yearly as well.
