Posted on 09/05/2022 by Drake Andrew

Who commissioned the Oath of the Horatii?

475. In 1784 Louis XVI (ruled 1774-1792) commissioned from Jacques-Louis David a life-size depiction of the ancient Roman story of the Horatii family pledging to fight the Curiatii family. That painting, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, is one of the most famous images in the history of French art.

Who commissioned the oath of horatii and for what purpose?

As was traditional, David’s Oath of the Horatii was commissioned by the King as the summation of David’s five years of study in Rome. Such a work was to be exhibited in an annual exhibition of new art held in a large room or salon in the monarch’s palace in Paris, the Louvre (now the museum).

What is the Oath of Horatii based on?

The story of Oath of the Horatii came from a Roman legend first recounted by the Roman historian Livy involving a conflict between the Romans and a rival group from nearby Alba. Rather than continue a full-scale war, they elect representative combatants to settle their dispute.

Why did Jacques-Louis David painted Oath of the Horatii?

This stage direction as well as other contemporary productions and images related to the story of Horatii in particular—and oath-taking in general—may provide the background for David’s decision to paint the moment when the brothers take their oath to defend Rome—an act of personal sacrifice for a political ideal.

How does David’s composition focus the viewer’s eye on the swords?

The composition of this painting leads our eyes to the swords because of the empty diamond shape between the three brothers and their father. The columns provide strong verticals which provide stability to the piece. The three arches seem to group the three groups of figures.
