What is CTS BD1 steel?
An American steel by Carpenter, CTS-BD1 is a vacuum-melted stainless steel that is highly corrosion resistant and holds a good edge. It is sometimes likened to AUS-8 or 8Cr13MoV, but with slightly better edge holding. It is relatively easy to sharpen, and the carbides are medium sized.
What is CTS steel?
General Description of CTS™-XHP: Straight from Carpenter Carpenter CTS™ XHP alloy is powder metallurgy, air-hardening, high carbon, high chromium, corrosion-resistant alloy. It can be considered either a high hardness 440C stainless steel or a corrosion-resistant D2 tool steel.

Is BD1 steel stainless?
Description Carpenter CTS™ BD1 alloy is a high-carbon chromium steel that provides stainless properties with high hardness and excellent wear resistance. In terms of hardness and wear resistance, Carpenter CTS BD1 alloy behaves very similarly to tool steels.
Is CTS BD1N stainless?
CTS-BD1N is a high quality stainless steel knife that is gradually gaining traction within the world of high-end kitchen knives. It is a nitrogen based steel, so it sharpens easily while also not being as susceptible to chipping.
What steel does spyderco use?
CTS-XHP, made by Carpenter Technology. Often referred to as a stainless version of D2. D2, a high performance tool steel that features outstanding wear resistance. Spyderco uses Crucible’s version of D2, which is a powder metallurgy version.

Is CTS BD1N hard to sharpen?
CTS BD1N steel is good knife steel at all relevant factors. It offers excellent edge retention, great wear retention, decent toughness, great corrosion resistance, and is easy to sharpen.
Is CTS XHP better than S35VN?
The closest high-end stainless steel to our CTS XHP, would be the CPM S35VN, they are both great for edge retention, corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and they are both hard to sharpen with a decent Toughness, and they re bit close in the chemical composition, therefore the CPM S35VN is slightly better than the …
Is BD1N better than S30V?
S30V beats BD1N steel in edge retention, and toughness. BD1N nitrogen-based alloy on the other hand offers better hardness, corrosion resistance, and may offer slightly better wear resistance.
What is CPM M4?
CPM M4 is a high vanadium special purpose high-speed steel exhibiting better wear resistance and toughness than M2 or M3 in cold work punches, die inserts and cutting applications, but these reasons are why it is widely used in competition cutting blades.
An American steel by Carpenter, CTS-BD1 is a vacuum-melted stainless steel that is highly corrosion resistant and holds a good edge. It is sometimes likened to AUS-8 or 8Cr13MoV, but with slightly better edge holding.
Is cts-bd1 a good steel to buy?
In the end it is nice to have lots of different steels to try out and see which one YOU like. CTS-BD1 is considered an economy or entry level steel. Nothing close to S30V, 154CM, or VG10.
What is the difference between BD1 and VG10 steel?
VG10 has lower edge retention, slightly lower toughness and higher corrosion resistance compared to the CTS BD1 steel.
What kind of steel is in Spyderco?
Spyderco made it’s start with Gin 1 steel which is the same composition as BD1. It’s not intended to be a “super steel” now but when Spyderco began it was one of the best premium stainless steels available in Japan.
