What are the tiers in competitive Pokemon?

Pokémon are assigned to several tiers: Ubers, Standard aka Overused (OU), Borderline (BL), Underused (UU), Never used (NU). Standard, as it implies, is the general and ‘normal’ environment for Competitive Pokémon Battling. Ubers are banned from this environment but everything else is okay.

How do competitive Pokemon tiers work?

Smogon’s tier system is used to rank Pokemon into several groups based on their perceived power and usage in competitive play. These tiers dictate which Pokemon can be used in the various metagames of competitive play. Each metagame encompasses different Pokemon, and therefore each one is unique in its style of play.

What is the order of Smogon tiers?

For reference, the order of tiers from highest to lowest is: Ubers, OverUsed (OU), UnderUsed (UU), RarelyUsed (RU), and NeverUsed (NU). Smogon Doubles and Little Cup are tiered independently of these metagames, and VGC is not tiered at all, instead using the current rules for that particular season.

Mega forms cannot be in tiers lower than their base forms even if they do not have enough usage to remain in a specific tier. For example, Mega Garchomp does not receive enough usage to be OU on its own, but Garchomp does, keeping Mega Garchomp from dropping to UU. Some Pokémon are usable in multiple tiers.
