They are also well suited for terrariums and turtle tanks since the intake can go down further than power filters.

Is a sump better than a canister filter?
Saltwater tanks CAN be run with an external canister filter, but anything larger than a 100 litres may may require additional filtration capacity. Saltwater aquariums require good water flow as well as low nutrient levels, and for that reason sumps are generally regarded as superior in this application.
What size canister filter do I need?

Take into account the size of your tank. The dimensions and gallon capacity of your aquarium will determine how much water you’d want to be turned per hour. I would usually recommend that you look for at least 4 times of water turnover per hour with canister filters.
How often should I change my canister filter media?
every three to four weeks
Be sure to replace the filter media at least every three to four weeks and give the filter housing a quick rinse. If any algae or debris has accumulated in the intake tube, clean that as well.
